Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
liebe Freundinnen und Freunde im Deutsch-Israelischen Jugendaustausch,
ein ereignisreiches Jahr 2019 geht zu Ende – ein Jahr voller vielfältiger Entwicklungen in den Gesellschaften, in denen wir leben – in Deutschland und Israel. Der deutsch-israelische Jugendaustausch, so scheint es, zeichnet sich bei allen Veränderungsprozessen als beständiges Aktionsfeld ab, das junge Menschen zusammenbringt und durch intensive Begegnungen nachhaltig verbindet. Dies sind deutliche Botschaften der zahlreichen kleinen und großen Veranstaltungen mit jungen Menschen und Fachkräften, die wir bei ConAct in Kooperation mit der Israel Youth Exchange in diesem Jahr begleiten konnten.
Da waren die großen Veranstaltungen im Prozess der Errichtung eines Deutsch-Israelischen Jugendwerks – eine bilaterale Trägerkonferenz und eine bilaterale Jugendkonferenz – bei denen mehr als 400 (junge) Menschen zusammengekommen sind. Und da waren die Begegnungen im zu Ende gehenden Projekt „Living Diversity in Germany and Israel“, in denen in diesem Jahr junge Multiplikator*innen aus beiden Ländern ihre persönlichen Migrationsgeschichten in den Mittelpunkt stellten. Die Wirkungskraft der Begegnungen und Gespräche beeindrucken jederzeit neu – von einem Teilnehmenden aus Deutschland formuliert klingt das beispielsweise so: „Vor dieser Diskussion hatte ich sehr feste Meinungen über die Struktur der israelischen Gesellschaft. (…) Jetzt habe ich erkannt, dass das Land viel komplizierter ist. Ich wusste wenig über die innerjüdischen Aspekte. Die unterschiedlichen und widersprüchlichen Seiten zu hören, wie junge Israelis ihr Land heute wahrnehmen, hat mehr Empathie und Verständnis für die Komplexität dieser Region gebracht.“
Mit der guten Botschaft, dass Veränderungen möglich sind und wir alle in internationalen und deutsch-israelischen Begegnungen jederzeit dazu beitragen, neue Horizonte an Sichtweisen und Erfahrungen zu eröffnen, verabschieden wir uns in die Winterpause. Wir danken allen Partnerinnen und Partnern im Deutsch-Israelischen Jugendaustausch in Deutschland und Israel für die gute, anregende und vertrauensvolle Zusammenarbeit im Jahr 2019!

ConAct und die Israel Youth Exchange Authority laden zum ersten Teil des New Con-T-Acts Match-Making-Seminars 2020 ein, einem Programm zum Aufbau neuer Partnerschaften zwischen deutschen und israelischen Organisationen/Trägern der Jugendhilfe und Bildungsarbeit. Im Rahmen des Seminars werden die im Vorfeld bereits „verkuppelten“ deutschen und israelischen Partnerorganisationen zusammengebracht. Dies eröffnet die Gelegenheit, die Partner*innen des jeweils anderen Landes persönlich und vor Ort kennenzulernen. Außerdem wird mit Unterstützung von ConAct und der IYEA die Planung von konkreten Begegnungsprojekten für das nächste Jahr erleichtert werden – durch Hinweise zu Inhalten, Finanzierung und pädagogischer Gestaltung der Programme. In den Jahren 2018 und 2019 beschäftigte sich ConAct im Rahmen des Projektes „Living Diversity in Germany and Israel“ intensiv mit dem Thema Jugendaustausch in den Migrationsgesellschaften Deutschlands und Israels. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Bemühungen stand eine Reihe neuer Austauschprojekte mit sechs Kooperationspartnern. Die Broschüre „Your Story Moves! Begegnungen junger Menschen in Migrationsgesellschaften: Momentaufnahmen – Reflexionen – Handlungsimpulse“ wirft ein Licht auf die Migrationsgesellschaften beider Länder und auf einige Herausforderungen, die sie für Pädagog*innen und Jugendarbeiter*innen darstellen. Die Publikation dokumentiert ferner eine Vielzahl von Erkenntnissen und Erfahrungen, die die Teilnehmer*innen beider Länder im Rahmen der genannten Austauschprojekte gesammelt haben.

Die Schriftenreihe „ConAct-Info“ hat ein umfassendes Update bekommen. Die Broschüren „Förderung aus Mitteln des Kinder- und Jugendplans des Bundes (KJP) im Sonderprogramm Deutschland – Israel“, „Gute Ideen kosten Geld: Fördermöglichkeiten für deutsch-israelische Austauschprogramme“ und „Sprachkurse: Hebräisch und Arabisch lernen in Israel und Deutschland“ geben einen Überblick über verschiedene Themenfelder – von den Fundraisingmöglichkeiten bis hin zu Sprachkursangeboten. Jetzt wurden sie nicht nur in das Corporate Design von ConAct eingepasst, sondern auch inhaltlich komplett überarbeitet. Alle Kontaktadressen, Ansprechpartner*innen und Förderinformationen wurden auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Die Hefte können bei ConAct bestellt werden und stehen zum Download bereit.

Am 26. und 27. November fand in Potsdam die Abschlusskonferenz des von ConAct und der Israel Youth Exchange Authority von 2015 bis 2019 durchgeführten Projekts „Living Diversity in Germany and Israel“ statt. 80 Teilnehmende aus Deutschland und Israel folgten der Einladung zur Tagung, die unter dem Titel „Expanding Narratives in German-Israeli Youth Exchange: Your Story Moves!“ stand. Neben einem Rückblick auf die inhaltlichen Entwicklungen und Programmformate des Projekts „Living Diversity“ kamen auch Projektkoordinator*innen und Teilnehmer*innen der Austauschprojekte sowie Expert*innen der diversitätsbewussten Bildungsarbeit zu Wort.

Die Antragszahlen für deutsch-israelische Austauschprojekte sind abermals gestiegen – diese erfreuliche Nachricht wurde auf der diesjährigen Sitzung des Gemischten Fachausschusses für den Deutsch-Israelischen Jugendaustausch in Hamburg diskutiert. Mit mehr als 380 Anträge auf Förderung für Austauschprogramme steht dem deutsch-israelischen Jugendaustausch für 2020 ein Jahr voller Aktivitäten bevor – darunter zahleiche neue Partnerschaftsprojekte. Vom 2. bis 5. Dezember 2019 tagte das deutsch-israelische Gremium zum Jugendaustausch in diesem Jahr im Norden Deutschlands.

Frederik Gulbeyaz ist 29, Dialogmoderator und Alumnus von „Dialog macht Schule“, einer der Partnerorganisationen, die im Rahmen des Austauschprogramms „Your Story Moves! – Begegnungen junger Menschen in Migrationsgesellschaften“ in den deutsch-israelischen Jugendaustausch eingestiegen sind. Er wohnt in Berlin, arbeitet als Dozent und Projektmitarbeiter bei Interkulturell-Aktiv e.V. und interessiert sich besonders für transkulturelle Begegnungsarbeit und Dialog. Im Oktober 2018 und April 2019 hat er am Austauschprogramm „Your Story Moves!“ in Israel und Deutschland teilgenommen. Wir haben mit ihm über seine Erfahrungen im Programm gesprochen.

„Wir vergessen nicht, wir gehen tanzen“ – unter diesem Motto erzählen junge Menschen aus Deutschland und Israel Geschichten von ihren Begegnungen und Erlebnissen im jeweils anderen Land. Nun geht das Projekt in die zweite Runde: Neben Kurzgeschichten gibt es die Möglichkeit, auch Videos, Fotostorys oder Podcasts einzureichen. So haben die jungen Menschen die Möglichkeit, ihre Geschichte in ihrem bevorzugten Medium zu erzählen. Auf der Website www.dont-forget-dance.org werden die Beiträge veröffentlicht. Bitte helfen Sie uns dabei, die Erfahrungen und Geschichten junger Menschen aus Deutschland und Israel sichtbar zu machen: Leiten Sie die Information gerne weiter an aktuelle oder ehemalige Teilnehmende Ihrer Austauschprojekte und Freiwilligendienste und ermuntern Sie sie zur Teilnahme.

Ab März bietet ConAct wieder einem jungen Menschen aus Israel die Möglichkeit, im Rahmen eines sechsmonatigen Bundesfreiwilligendienstes in die Arbeit einer Koordinierungsstelle im deutsch-israelischen Jugendaustausch hineinzuschnuppern. Zur Bewerbung eingeladen sind junge Menschen mit ersten Erfahrungen in einem internationalen Austauschprojekt oder mit Bezug zu Deutschland, aber auch andere Interessierte sind herzlich willkommen! Doron Galias Großmutter ist aus Dresden. Nach dem Armeedienst verbrachte er drei Monate in Berlin und leitete vor vier Jahren eine Theaterdelegation nach Berlin. 2015 nahm er am Deutsch-Israelischen Jugendkongress in Berlin teil.

„Im Juli 2016 beschäftigten sich 12 Jugendliche aus Rosh Ha'Ayin/Israel und 12 Jugendliche aus Leipzig intensiv mit dem Thema „Zivilcourage“. Im Verlauf der Woche wurde dieses Thema in unterschiedlichem Kontext beleuchtet. Gemeinsam starteten wir in Berlin mit einer Street Art Tour. Wir gingen auf Entdeckungstour durch Kreuzberg und Friedrichshain, erfuhren viel über die Wahl der Motive, die Techniken und deren Umsetzung an den Häuserwänden. Am Montag ging es thematisch von der Gegenwart in die Vergangenheit. Im Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz erfuhren die teilnehmenden Jugendlichen an verschiedenen Beispielen, wie Zivilcourage während der Nazi-Zeit möglich war und wie dadurch Menschen gerettet werden konnten.
In Leipzig angekommen bezogen die israelischen Jugendlichen Quartier bei den Familien der Jugendlichen. Mittwoch waren wir zu Gast in der Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst. Ausgehend von dem in der Ausstellung gezeigten Film „Der Krieg in Kiew“ verknüpften die jungen Leute aktuelle Themen aus ihrem Land und übersetzten diese in einem künstlerischen Prozess in Fotografien, Zeichnungen und eine Performance. Am Abend konnten sich die Teilnehmenden in der Kletterhalle „No Limit“ an verschiedenen Felsen ausprobieren und gemeinsam Beachvolleyball spielen. Donnerstag lag unser Schwerpunkt auf Zivilcourage während der Wende 1989 in Leipzig. Dazu besuchten wir das Zeitgeschichtliche Forum. Am Freitag wurde die Methode des Forumtheaters genutzt, um in Gruppen Szenen zu entwickeln, die Zivilcourage forderten. Gemeinsam wurden zu den gezeigten Szenen verschiedene Lösungsmöglichkeiten probiert und diskutiert. Hier konnten die Jugendlichen ganz praktisch ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen einbringen und neue Sichtweisen dazu kennenlernen. In einer abschließenden Feedbackrunde zum Thema trugen die jungen Leute ihre Statements zu Zivilcourage vor.“

EUROPEANS FOR PEACE fördert internationale Austauschprojekte für Jugendliche und junge Menschen aus Mittel-, Ost- und Südosteuropa, Israel und Deutschland. Schulen und außerschulische Bildungsträger können sich jetzt wieder in internationaler Partnerschaft um die Förderung ihres gemeinsamen Vorhabens bewerben. Ein Jahr zwischen Berlin und Tel Aviv

Eine Freundschaft in Briefen zwischen Berlin und Tel Aviv: „Ach, Yael, ich würde jetzt gerne mit dir reden. Es ist Abend, ich sitze in der neuen Wohnung, höre auf die fremden Geräusche und denke an Berlin.“ „Anja, seit wir begonnen haben, uns zu schreiben, finde ich Worte für das Gefühl von Fremdheit, das mich seit unserem Umzug begleitet.“ Als Anja Reich Berlin verlässt, um für zwei Jahre nach Tel Aviv zu gehen, lässt sie auch ihre Nachbarin Yael Nachshon Levin zurück. Diese lebt erst seit Kurzem in Berlin, und Tel Aviv ist ihre Heimat. Die beiden beschließen, sich zu schreiben: über ihre Erfahrungen mit der getauschten Heimat, über das Fremde und das Vertraute, über Israel und Deutschland. Das heißt auch: über Terror und Antisemitismus, über die Frage nach Sicherheit für die Familie und danach, was Heimat heute bedeutet.

an eventful year 2019 is coming to an end – a year full of diverse developments in the societies in which we live, Germany and Israel. It seems that the German-Israeli youth exchange is emerging in all change processes as a constant field of action that brings young people together and connects them through intensive encounters. These are the clear messages of the numerous small and large events with young people and professionals that we were able to support at ConAct this year in cooperation with the Israel Youth Exchange Authority.
There were the major events in the process of establishing a German-Israeli Youth Office – a bilateral conference of exchange organizations and a bilateral youth conference – in which more than 400 (young) people came together. And there were the encounters in the “Living Diversity in Germany and Israel” project, in which young multipliers from both countries focused on their personal migration stories this year.
The effectualness of the encounters and conversations have the power to impress at any time. For example, from a participant from Germany it sounds like this: “Before this discussion, I had very firm opinions about the structure of the Israeli society. (...) Now I have realized that the country is much more complicated. I knew little about the inner Jewish aspects. Hearing the different and contradictory sides of how young Israelis perceive their country today has brought more empathy and understanding for the complexity of this region.”
With the good news that changes are possible and that we all contribute to international and German-Israeli encounters at any time to open up new horizons of perspectives and experiences, we go into recess for the winter break. We want to thank all partners in the German-Israeli youth exchange in Germany and Israel for the good, stimulating and trustful cooperation in 2019!

Establishing new partnerships for German-Israeli youth and professionals exchange

Part 1: March 22 to 27, 2020 in Germany or Israel
ConAct and the Israel Youth Exchange Authority invite to the New Con-T-Acts Match-Making-Seminar 2020 in order to continue the process of establishing new partnerships between German and Israeli organizations for youth projects and the exchange of professionals. During the two-part seminar, the German-Israeli partner organizations which have been “matched” beforehand according to their wishes are brought together. The seminar aims at getting to know each other and to start with planning first encounter projects. By informing about the contents, financial support and an educational design of the exchange programs, we want to facilitate the first steps in planning.

Living Diversity in Germany and Israel: Your Story Moves!

In the years 2018 and 2019 ConAct worked intensively on the topic of youth exchange in the migration societies of Germany and Israel. At the core of those efforts a series of new exchange projects with six cooperation partners has been implemented. The newly released booklet “Your Story Moves! Encounters of Young People in Migration Societies: Snapshots – Contemplations – Ideas for Action” sheds light on both countries’ migration societies and some challenges they pose for educators and youth workers. The publication further documents a rich and wide range of insights and experiences that were made by participants of both countries during the aforementioned exchange projects. Based on the observations and experiences made, it suggests ideas for action on how to plan and implement a diversity-conscious youth exchange in our migration societies in Germany and Israel. The aim to embrace and value the individual biographies and experiences of the participants can be truly empowering and at the same time serve as the key to find common ground beyond traditional categories.

Conference in Potsdam Sheds Light on the Diversity of Narratives in Germany and Israel

On November 26 and 27, the final conference of the project “Living Diversity in Germany and Israel” took place in Potsdam. ConAct and the Israel Youth Exchange Authority had implemented this project from 2015 to 2019. 80 participants followed the invitation to the conference, entitled “Expanding Narratives in German-Israeli Youth Exchange: Your Story Moves!”. Besides a review of the developments, contents and thematic priorities of the project “Living Diversity”, the participants and facilitators of the exchange projects got a chance to speak, as well as some experts on diversity-conscious education. Practical workshops with insights into education on issues of racism, anti-Semitism, democratic competencies and dealing with history then provided ideas and suggestions on how to strengthen a positive take on diversity.

380 youth exchange programs have been suggested for funding in 2019

Israeli-German Youth Exchange is very lively and present with all the projects put into practice in 2019 – this is one conclusion of the meeting of the Mixed Commission for German-Israeli Youth Exchange at its annual meeting, which took place from December 2nd to 5th 2019 in Hamburg, Germany. The commission thanked ConAct and Israel Youth Exchange Authority (IYEA) for their great engagement in supporting the field of the exchange.
As every year, the representatives of organizations and authorities involved in the extracurricular youth exchange between Germany and Israel met for three days to discuss recent challenges and developments in youth encounters. After an in-depth work on the topic of the project “Living Diversity in Germany and Israel”, the Mixed Commission dealt with the funding applications for 2020. In consideration of the qualitative requirements for bilateral German-Israeli exchange programs, the Mixed Commission suggested the funding of around 380 programs for the youth exchange in 2020. The Mixed Commission thanked the organizations on both sides for their great commitment to German-Israeli youth exchange. This commitment and the continuity in the cooperation show the continuous and intensive interest of young people from both countries in encounters and exchanges.
The Mixed Commission also came to speak of this year's projects in the process of extablishing a German-Israeli Youth Office. The committee's minutes state: “The establishment of a German-Israeli Youth Office is a historic signal for the special relationship between Germany and Israel. The official start of the government negotiations could not begin due to the ongoing government formation in Israel. The commission advocates expanding the existing structures of the two coordination offices ConAct and IYEA into a Youth Office. The special funds of 1 million EUR provided by the German Bundestag in 2019 were used for two very successful bilateral conferences in Berlin – one for exchange organizations and one for young people – as well as for the funding of 39 special projects in the process of the establishment of a German Israeli youth organization. (...) The knowledge gained in the conferences and projects will be used to strengthen German-Israeli youth contacts and to expand and establish permanent bilateral cooperation. Special funds of 2 million EUR will be available in 2020. "

Frederic Gülbeyaz is 29, a dialog moderator and alumnus of “Dialog at School “, one of the partner organizations involved in the exchange program “Your Story Moves! – Encounters of Young People in Migration Societies”. He lives in Berlin, works as a lecturer and project coordinator at the organization Interkulturell-Aktiv and is particularly interested in transcultural encounters and dialog formats. In October 2018 and April 2019 he participated in the exchange program “Your Story Moves!” In Israel and Germany. An eventful year 2019 with a large number of German-Israeli youth exchange projects is coming to an end. Undoubtely, new impressions, experiences and insights were happening in your exchange projects – and we are looking for the pictures of them! Because after all, pictures are an important tool when it comes to describing how memorable such an encounter can be.
There are pictures from the encounter between German and Israeli young people that capture a special atmosphere? You captured a funny moment with your camera where your group finalized their project? Or is there this one special photo where you can see exactly how much fun the participants had in the various leisure activities? We are looking for photos that impressively reflect the diverse youth exchange projects. We are looking forward to all your submissions and your favourite pictures!

Story project by ConAct and IYEA enters the next phase – this time also with videos, photo stories and podcasts

“We don't forget, we go dancing. German-Israeli exchange writes stories” – under this slogan, young people from Germany and Israel are telling their stories of encounters and experiences in the other country. Now the project enters its second phase: This time, it is also possible to submit videos, photo stories or podcasts in addition to short stories. This way, young people have the opportunity to tell their story in their preferred medium. On the website dont-forget-dance.org, the online library of the project, the stories will be published.
Please help us to make the experiences and stories of young people from Germany and Israel visible: Forward the information to current or former participants of your exchange projects and volunteer services and encourage them to participate. The volunteer will work in an interesting field of the international youth work in the bilateral context of Germany and Israel and will be involved in running projects of ConAct (seminars, info events etc.). We especially encourage all volunteers to develop an own project within the scope of our activities and act on her/his own responsibility. The voluntary position at the ConAct-office will be a combined service at two placements: Most of the time will be spent with ConAct and its running projects. One day per week will be at a youth club or community center in Wittenberg, including running daily activities.

[...] I fell in love with both ways of celebrating: the Jewish and the Christian. In my life and my book I wanted to place a Hanukkiah next to a Christmas tree, to put Purim rattles next to the saying: "Trick or Treat", to put a grinning pumpkin next to a Haman bag and to celebrate Rosh Hashana, including the gefilte fish, at the turn of the year. In my imaginary family, I noticed that they cheered up house residents and their surroundings and did not draw attention to community life in an artificial or personal way. The presence of both festivals on each signpost completes the traditional jigsaw puzzle, part by part, closes its previous gaps.[...]
Doron Galia's grandmother is from Dresden. After serving in the army, he spent three months in Berlin and led a theater delegation to Berlin four years ago. In 2015 he took part in the German-Israeli Youth Congress in Berlin. You can find his complete story in Hebrew here.

July 2016: Moral Courage – Past and Present – Where do I stand? Encounter between the Kinder- und Jugendkulturwerkstatt Leipzig and the youth club „The Basement“ in Rosh Ha'Ayin

"In July 2016, 12 young people from both Rosch ha’Ayin and Leipzig came together to work intensively on the topic of “moral courage”. In the process of the week the topic was highlighted in different contexts. Together we started with a Streetart Tour in Berlin. We explored Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, learnt a lot about the history of the different motives, the painting techniques and the realization of the projects on the walls. On Monday we shifted the topic from present to past: In the House of the Wannsee-Conference the participants got to know examples of moral courage during the time of National Socialism and learnt how lives were saved. The participants split into small groups and started a research in the library regarding different examples.
In Leipzig the participants moved in with their host families. On Wednesday we visited the gallery for contemporary art (GfZK). The Workshop here dealt with the current exhibition “Sentsovs Camera”. The participants watched the movie “The War in Kiev”. They connected the story with topics in their countries and transferred it into a drawings, photographies and performances. In the evening, the group visited the indoor climbing wall “No Limit”, where they also had the chance to play some beach volleyball. On Thursday the thematic focus was on moral courage during the process of reunification in Leipzig in 1989. Therefor we visited the “Zeitgeschichtliches Forum”. Afterwards we met in a youth center for an intercultural evening. On Friday the group developed theater scenes, in which moral courage was demanded from the protagonists. Together they discussed and tried out different solutions for these scenes. Here the young participants could bring in their personal background and to get to know new perspectives. During a feedback round the young people presented their statements regarding moral courage."
