70 Jahre nach Auschwitz
|
Was macht diesen Konflikt so schwer lösbar?

the festive year 2015 has started. Considering the relations between Germany and Israel it is a special year – 50 years have gone by since both states have initially established diplomatic relations. The youth contacts began even earlier – first visits of young Germans to Israel are dating back to the mid-1950s. We know, that these first ambitions for building bridges over the past were often supported on the Israeli side by those who were forced to leave Germany/Europe and were persecuted by the National Socialists. These first steps in getting in touch with one another paved the way for the later establishment of diplomatic relations.
The relation between both states and their populations continues to be some kind of a wonder given the historical background. Therefore, we have many reasons to remember, to document, to question, to discuss and to celebrate this year! For the Youth Exchange the Secretary of State of the Federal Youth Ministry, Dr. Ralf Kleindiek, opened the range of activities celebrating 60 years of German-Israeli Youth Exchange by visiting the office of ConAct last week. He thereby honored the significance of all Youth Exchange activities and expressed his best wishes for good projects and encounters this year.
This we do as well – best wishes for a fruitful exchange year 2015!
Yours sincerely,
the ConAct-Team
With a solemn ‘click’ Dr. Ralf Kleindiek has activated the bilingual internet portal www.Exchange-Visions.de. Ready to go: The previous collection of documented youth exchange programs of over five decades has started over. Organizations supporting and realizing German-Israeli encounter projects are invited to document their work and its results for the public. The living archive is a space for documentation as well as a rich source for ideas, suggestions, topics, methods and moving stories in the field of exchange. With the visit of Dr. Ralf Kleindiek at ConAct in Wittenberg on 13 February 2015, the Coordination Center for German-Israeli Youth Exchange has officially started its activities in the anniversary year of German-Israeli relations. |
In 2015 ConAct and the Israel Youth Exchange Authority (IYEA) want to highlight the youth contacts, which have grown over many years, as main pillars of German-Israeli relations – celebrating together with the former and latest young generations of both countries. With the release of the revised website Exchange-Visions.de one of the various anniversary projects of ConAct and the IYEA has already been set in motion. We are looking forward to the following projects: the German-Israeli youth expedition “Spotlight on ... 50 Years Israel & Germany” sends young, exchange experienced young persons on a cinematic journey through time, a youth congress with 300 participants brings together former participants of exchange programs and volunteer services in Germany and Israel and publications reflect on the history and practice of the German-Israeli youth exchange. |
60 Years of German-Israeli youth exchange – this is the occasion to compile experiences, memories and insights from six decades of exchange. The renewed website invites you to contribute and document. The joint project of ConAct and the IYEA, involving numerous exchange organizations and many years of dedicated people in Germany and Israel, offers a chance to explore the sixty-year-long development of German-Israeli youth contacts in German and Hebrew online. Moreover, we invite you to contribute to the story by sharing your work or personal experiences, pictures and stories with other visitors or to browse the website for ideas, subjects and practical experiences. Did you participate in a German-Israeli exchange before or have you been even responsible for such a program? It doesn’t matter whether it was a professionals program in 1996, a voluntary service in 1968 or a youth exchange last summer. Share your reports, anecdotes and pictures with others. Contribute to the digital exhibition www.Exchange-Visions.de! |
70 years ago, on 27 January 1945, the German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops. For this reason, in 2015 the youth exchange project arranged by the German Bundestag dealt with this symbol of the Holocaust, which also stands for all the atrocities and crimes committed by the National Socialists. The two volunteers at the ConAct office, Manoël Johr and Alon Spitzer, attended the encounter in Poland and Germany as well as the memorial trip to Auschwitz and report their personal impressions on our website. |
Against the background of the German-Israeli anniversary, the Bertelsmann Stiftung has presented the survey “Germany and Israel Today: United by the Past, Divided by the Present?” in which the following questions were evaluated: What kind of image do the people of both countries have mutually, how important is the past and which expectations do they have on one another? And in what ways these perceptions and attitudes have changed in recent years? The survey shows that since the start of diplomatic relations fifty years ago, Israel and Germany have displayed an extraordinary commitment to the path of rapprochement. At the same time, it also shows that renewed efforts will be necessary in order to take today’s achievements one step further. Learn more about the study here. The German Federal Youth Council, the Israeli Youth Council “Council of Youth Movements in Israel” and the Polish Youth Council “Polska Rada Organizacji Młodzieżowych” have made a statement at the end of their joint seminar around the commemoration day of 27 January 2015. At a ceremony at the Auschwitz memorial site the board members signed the text on behalf of their members. The Auschwitz survivor Asher Oud and the German consul in Krakow, Dr. W. Köhler, attended the ceremony. ConAct was represented with a short welcoming speech and acknowledged the significance of the event, for which young people from Germany, Israel and Poland had been invited at this very important date to discuss issues of shared memories/commemoration and the meaning of the past for the present youth education. |
