The last weeks were filled with events, encounters and celebrations all around the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel on May 12, 1965.
For the field of youth exchange there were several highlights: About 300 young people from Israel and Germany came together for 4 days at the German-Israeli Youth Congress in Berlin, in order to discuss the past, celebrate the presence and be creative for the future of the (youth) relations between both countries. In addition to that the Federal Youth Minister, Manuela Schwesig, visited the youth congress in company of the presidents of both states and Chancellor Merkel invited participants of the youth congress in order to learn about their experiences and honor the significance of German-Israeli Youth Exchange in its great variety.
We are happy and fulfilled from these highlights – they encourage and inspire for the many meaningful projects in youth and professional exchanges, which take place throughout the whole year, thanks to the many organizations and participants involved from both countries!
We wish to thank all of you, who during these weeks are investing special energies and time to strengthen and promote the Youth Exchange between Israel and Germany!
Yours sincerely,
the ConAct-Team
From May 8 to 11, at the German-Israeli Youth Congress in Berlin, 300 young Israelis and Germans discussed their experiences of voluntary services and youth exchanges, current insights and future perspectives of German-Israeli relations. Background of the Youth congress is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries in May 1965. The youth congress was a joint project of the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, the Israel Youth Exchange Authority and ConAct – Coordination Center German-Israeli Youth Exchange. The program was created by the contribution of many exchange partners and participants from youth associations and encounter projects. Discover more about the German-Israeli Youth Congress: www.youth-congress-2015.org – Find voices and stories about the youth congress at the blog and via the hashtag #yoco15 on Twitter! Here you will finde the program of the youth congress. |
Twenty young German and Israeli participants of the German-Israeli Youth Congress were invited by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel on May 12, 2015 to discuss contents and results of the outh congress with her and the President of Israel Reuven Rivlin. The participants from Germany and Israel have taken part on German-Israeli youth encounters or performed a voluntary service in the other country before. Merkel and Rivlin responded very accurately to the young person’s comments and insights and promised to care for sufficient funding of youth exchange and voluntary service in the future in order to keep those processes of getting to know one another and cooperation. |
The youth encounter “Spotlight on… 50 Years Israel & Germany“ set the starting point of joint projects of ConAct and the Israel Youth Exchange Authority for the anniversary year of German-Israeli relations. From 13 to 26 March 2015, 22 young adults from Germany and Israel went together on an expedition through the past, present and future of the manifold relations between the two countries and used their personal experiences to make short films. All in all five short films dealing with different topics were developed and were shown on the German-Israeli Youth Congress in May 2015 in Berlin. |
The current anniversary of German-Israeli relations is noticeable in many places. Even before diplomatic relations were established youth exchange has been a supporting pillar of contacts between both countries. This is documented vividly in the new German-Hebrew booklet which inducts amusingly and informatively into past and present of German-Israeli youth exchange. A historical abstract adds pictures and background information to important stations of political developments; clearly arranged figures gather dates and numbers since the beginnings in the 1950s. Here you can download the Hebrew version of the booklet. |
In the new book German and Israeli authors give insights in research and practice of German-Israeli youth exchange and compile historical developments and research results of six decades of intense work in the field of German-Israeli encounters. Besides questions of concrete active shaping of political and social relations through German-Israeli youth exchange also changes of expectations, aims and concepts as well as visions for the future for German-Israeli youth contacts take center. Questions of presence of the past and challenges of clashing of different living environments in Europe and the Middle East during encounters of young Germans and Israelis are discussed. |
Also in the anniversary year 2015, in which the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel is celebrated, ConAct was present at the Israel Day that took place nationwide. On the occasion of the 67th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel more than 20 organizations came together on April 24, 2015 to celebrate a street festival at Wittenbergplatz in Berlin and to inform about Israel. |
Each year up to 900 German youths are doing a volunteer service in Israel. Within the frame of the “Kom-Mit-Nadev” volunteer program since 2010 also young Israeli are coming for a voluntary service to Germany. During a bilateral seminar, which took place in Berlin from February 20 to 22, 2015, the current “Kom-Mit-Nadev” volunteer generation met former German volunteers that served a volunteer service in Israel. Together the youths exchanged their views on the other country and spoke about the experiences they have gained through their services. |
ConAct together with other organizations of international youth work hosted two regional information and networking days in Munich and Nuremberg on February 26 and 27, 2015. Already active as well as interested organizations used both days to get information about funding, ideas for their own work and to link among each other. We thank all partners for the preparation and cooperation! |
On the occasion of the German-Israeli anniversary year the youth channel “Puls“ of Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting) together with the studio of German broadcaster ARD in Tel Aviv has started a dialogue platform between Israelis, Germans and Palestinians – Tacheles. Young persons from Israel, Germany and the Middle East meet at Tacheles. Every week they can discuss a common topic. Here you get to the platform Tacheles. You can also enter the discussion at the Tacheles facebook page. |
The foundation “Remebrance, Responsibility and Future“ has announced the winners in the EUROPEANS FOR PEACE funding program of the year 2013/2014. Three youth projects from Germany and Russia, Serbia, Germany and France and Israel and Germany were awarded for their commitment on the topic “Discrimination. Watch Out! Projects on exclusion then – and now“. The head of ConAct, Christine Mähler, was invited as long standing jury member to honor the German-Israeli youth project “AHAVA – LIEBE – LOVE: beyond ideology“: A choreographical research conducted by young people from Germany and Israel on the theme of "love" as a force for resisting discrimination and negative stereotyping. Project partners: Evangelical High School Siegen-Weidenau with Ramot Hefer High School, Maabarot, Israel. |
Anthology. Published in Hebrew (Afik Books) and German (S.Fischer)
50 years ago the states of Israel and Germany established diplomatic relations. While in former times coming to terms with the past and disputing issues of historical or familial guilt was prior, nowadays friendly encounters and cultural bonds are reality as well. Politics, literature and party – how does the third generation perceive those topics against the backdrop of history? The stories from both countries that are collected here tell us about it.
